Bubble Boy was financed by Disney for a modest $13 million and received a torrent of negative pre-release publicity by the Immune Deficiency Foundation and the ire of parents and children with immune diseases. Protests and demands that the movie not be released followed. Disney ignored the rage directed at this silly pic and dated it for August 24 against the comedies Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Summer Catch, The Curse of the Jade Scorpion and the unintentionally funny John Carpenter’s Ghosts of Mars. Adding to the glut of comedies already in the marketplace were American Pie 2, Rush Hour 2 and Rat Race.
Bubble Boy was booked into 1,605 theaters and was dead on arrival with $2,038,349 — faring the worst out of all the openers and placing #13 for the weekend led by the American Pie and Rush Hour sequels. Bubble Boy dipped a modest 36.7% to $1,290,861 in its second frame, but it was promptly pulled out of most theaters. It closed its domestic run with only $5,007,898. Disney would see back about $2.7 million after theaters take their percentage of the gross, barely putting a dent in their modest P&A spend any leaving the budget in the red. Disney dumped the pic straight to video or TV overseas.
