Bewitched gets the big screen mistreatment from Sony and this much maligned film cost $85 million and along with Stealth and XXX: State of the Union and Lords of Dogtown posted a $66 million second quarter loss for Sony — even after huge home video sales of Hitch and high earnings from their newly acquired MGM library. Sony originally scheduled Bewitched for a July 8 date, but moved it forward to June 24 when FOX scheduled Fantastic Four for the prime summer date. Bewitched was booked into 3,174 theaters and it opened slightly lower than expected with $20,131,130 — placing #2 for the weekend led by Batman Begins in its second frame. The film had poor word of mouth and was given a terrible C+ cinemascore from audiences and declined a heavy 54.5% in its second weekend to $9,156,580. Bewitched closed its US run with $63,313,159. The film pulled in mostly soft numbers overseas for an expensive film, with the exception of a decent $7.3 million from Nicole Kidman’s home country Australia and an ok $8.1 million from the UK. The overseas total was $68,113,010. The worldwide cume was $131.4 million, leaving Sony with about $72.2 million after theaters take their percentage of the gross, which would just about cover the worldwide P&A costs, but leave the budget in the red.
