FOX picked up this Martin Lawrence vehicle after DreamWorks dropped Rebound in early development. The film cost $33.1 million and FOX shuffled its release dates from April 8 to July 22, until they positioned Rebound as counter programming to War Of The Worlds on July 1. The family comedy was booked in 2,464 theaters and opened with a career low for Lawrence with $5,033,848 — placing #7 for the crowded weekend led by War Of The Worlds and holdovers Batman Begins and Mr. & Mrs. Smith. The film saw a modest 39.9% second weekend decline to $3,024,349 but it sank 57.2% in its third frame to $1,293,760 and promptly lost most of its theater count. Rebound closed with only $16,809,014. FOX distributed Rebound in Australia, Germany, Greece and Spain to all of $683,000 and dumped it straight to video in every other market. FOX would see back about $9.5 million of its worldwide cume after theaters take their percentage of the gross, which wouldn’t cover much of the P&A costs or any of the budget.
