Comedy troupe Broken Lizard’s followup to their surprise low budget success Super Troopers, was financed for a modest $8.5 million by Fox Searchlight, but Club Dread’s P&A costs were significantly more expensive than the production costs. Filmed back in 2002, the film was released Feb 27, 2004 and prior to release some free publicity arrived, courtesy of a lawsuit from Club Med who were incensed over the film’s title. Fox Searchlight opened Club Dread in the US against The Passion Of The Christ and the flops Twisted and Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights. It was booked in 1,807 theaters and grossed a dismal $3,035,688 — placing #10 for the weekend. The film suffered one of the worst declines on record, sinking 76.6% the following weekend to $710,944 and was yanked out of all, but 123 theaters going in its third frame. Club Dread closed its poor box office run with $5,001,708. Fox Searchlight would see back about $2.75 million after theaters take their percentage of the gross, which would barely cover the cost of striking release prints for theaters. FOX released the film overseas and dumped it straight to video in almost every market. The overseas cume was a mere $2.5 million and Spain posted the majority of its gross with $2.4 million.
