GODSEND

Lionsgate and 2929 Entertainment financed Godsend for $25 million and Lionsgate distributed in the US.  This was Todd Wagner and Mark Cuban’s first production for their newly launched 2929.  Godsend was filmed back in late 2002 and was to be released in 2003, but delayed after the studio sent the production back for reshoots.  The poorly reviewed film opened in 2,323 theaters against Mean Girls, Laws Of Attraction, Envy and Bobby Jones: Stroke of Genius.  Lionsgate was only expecting mid-single digit numbers and it came within its low expectations with $6,800,617 — placing #4 for the weekend led by Mean Girls.  Audiences gave Godsend a miserable D+ cinemascore and the film saw a steep 58.9% second weekend drop to $2,793,785.  Godsend declined 63.2% in its third weekend to $1,027,015 and quickly flamed out with $14,379,751.  After theaters take their percentage of the gross, Lionsgate would see back about $7.8 million, less than half of their P&A spend.  Pathé distributed in the UK to a soft $3 million, which posted the strongest overseas showings and cumed $15.7 million across numerous distributors.
