Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus was financed by River Road for $16.8 million and the New Line and HBO formed joint company Picturehouse acquired domestic rights while it was in production. Fur received mixed notices from critics and Picturehouse opened the film in 4 theaters and it pulled in an unimpressive $28,815 with a $7,203 per screen average. Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus expanded to 32 theaters in its second weekend and grossed a weak $49,675 with a $1,552 per screen average, killing its chance at a large expansion. Fur saw its widest release in just 39 theaters and closed its run with $223,202. The pic saw a limited rollout in most overseas markets and cumed $2.3 million across numerous distributors and it went straight to video in Russia and Germany.
