Walden Media and New Line financed How To Eat Fried Worms and the budget is unreported but estimated to be similar to the modestly priced Hoot which Walden and New Line financed for $15 million. New Line distributed in the US and after Hoot set the record for the worst wide opening in over 3,000 theaters in May, New Line wanted to send the kids pic straight to video. How To Eat Fried Worms tested well and New Line gave it a more scaled back theatrical release than Hoot and opened it in 1,870 theaters. How To Eat Fried Worms was positioned against another family film, Invincible and it placed outside the top 10 at #11 with a poor $4,003,537. The film saw a modest 26.3% second weekend decline to $2,951,683 and fell 49.8% in its third frame to $1,482,722 and closed its run with $13,040,527. New Line would see back about $7.1 million after theaters take their percentage of the gross, which would leave part of the modest ad spend in the red and the budget uncovered. Overseas, the film saw a brief theatrical release in 41 theaters in Australia, where Village Roadshow released it to $47,590 and in the United Arab Emirates to all of $10,879 and it went straight to video or television in every market. Domestic home video sales were more successful with $17.1 million (less after resellers take their cut and manufacturing costs).
