The Marine was financed for $20 million by WWE, which was their second film and it was released by FOX. FOX opened The Marine in 2,545 theaters and it only pulled in $7,138,774 — placing #6 for the weekend led by new opener The Grudge 2. It declined 46.8% to $3,795,160 in its second frame and dropped 50.3% in its third frame to $1,885,388. The Marine closed its US run with $18,844,784 which would leave FOX with about $10.3 million after theaters take their percentage of the gross, which falls far short of their P&A spend. FOX dumped the film in a limited release overseas, where it made a small $3.3 million and went straight to video in most markets. In an investor relations financial report, WWE listed zero revenue for The Marine, as FOX had yet to recoup their prints and advertising spend. The film sold well on home video pulling in $29.7 million (less after resellers take their cut and manufacturing costs). The pic did spawn a successful direct to video franchise.
