Financed by Walden Media and FOX for $20 million and released in the US by FOX, Chasing Mavericks managed to open even worse than their previous collaboration just a few weeks prior, Won’t Back Down which at the time of release set the record for worst opening ever in over 2,500 theaters. Chasing Mavericks avoided such milestones by being released in 2,002 theaters to a disastrous $2,268,274 which is one of the worst openings in over 2,000 theaters. The pic placed outside the top 10 at #13 for the weekend led by Argo and new opener Cloud Atlas. Another blow to the dimming star power of Gerard Butler, who had a poor 2012 when a few weeks later his romantic comedy Playing For Keeps flopped. Chasing Mavericks ended its US run with just $6,002,756 at the box office. Lakeshore Entertainment pre-sold the foreign rights to distributors, who dumped Chasing Mavericks after its terrible domestic run and the film managed only $2.2 million overseas in the handful of countries that gave it a theatrical release.
