Premium Rush was filmed in 2010 and Sony financed the $32 million film and set a Jan 2012 release date, which they pushed back to an end of summer August release. The pic would mark the first studio vehicle designed for Joseph Gordon-Levitt and the release delay was likely about the additional exposure the actor would have from co-starring in The Dark Knight Rises. Premium Rush came in line with Sony’s very modest expectations for the film with $6,030,164 in 2,255 theaters, placing #8 for the weekend behind action holdovers The Expendables 2, The Bourne Legacy and The Dark Knight Rises. The pic declined 34.1% to $3,971,312 in its second weekend and Premium Rush had a 41.8% third frame drop to $2,311,414 and ended its run with $20,275,446. Sony would see back about $11.1 million after theaters take their percentage of the gross, leaving part of the soft P&A spend in the red and the theatrical gross wouldn’t take a bite out of the budget. Sony put the film out overseas to poor numbers everywhere and it made only $11,117,755 and went straight to video in Italy and a handful of smaller European markets.
