New Regency fully financed the Vince Vaughn vehicle for $35 million and Unfinished Business posted the worst opening of the actor’s career, which had been in free-fall after flops The Internship, Delivery Man (also directed by Ken Scott), The Watch and The Dilemma. FOX distributed Unfinished Business in the US and in most overseas markets and invested in a pricey domestic P&A spend, with over $18 million just in national TV spots (as per iSpotTV), plus millions more in print, online, radio, poster, etc. Unfinished Business was tracking softly for a mid single digit weekend and bowed against Chappie and The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.
Reviews were awful and it came in below its low expectations with a terrible $4,772,613 in 2,777 theaters — where it placed #10 for one of the slowest weekends of the year, which was led by Chappie. Unfinished Business declined 51.5% in its second weekend to $2,315,953 and promptly lost most of its theater count. Unfinished Business closed its domestic run with only $10,219,501. About $5.6 million would be returned to FOX after theaters take their percentage of the gross, barely putting a dent in their P&A expenses.
Overseas, FOX released the film wide in the UK in 408 theaters to a terrible $593,176 and stopped reporting the gross after two weeks with a total of $1,057,035. FOX also saw similar poor numbers in Australia with a total of $1,073,442. The reported overseas cume was just $4,211,752.
