New Line tapped into the Munich based fund ALCAS to finance the $20 million Jack Black comedy and Tenacious D In The Pick Of Destiny was distributed by New Line in the US and they sold off most the foreign rights, which would limit their exposure to the budget. After a sizable prints and ad spend, New Line opened the film in 1,919 theaters over the crowded Thanksgiving frame. Tenacious D In The Pick Of Destiny pulled in a terrible $3,234,879 — placing outside the top 10 at #11 when holdovers Happy Feet and Casino Royale led the weekend. The pic fell 59.7% in its second weekend to $1,303,678 and promptly lost most of its theater count. Tenacious D closed its run with only $8,334,575. New Line would see returned about $4.5 million after theaters take their percentage of the gross, which would not cover much of the P&A costs. Overseas, the film grossed a poor $5.5 million across numerous distributors and $3.9 million of that came from Entertainment distributing in the UK. The film went straight to video in Russia, Mexico and most smaller markets. US video sales were on the soft side with $9.6 million (less after resellers take their cut and manufacturing costs).
