Did You Hear About the Morgans? was co-financed by Sony and Relativity for $58 million and Sony distributed worldwide. Sony opened Did You Hear About The Morgans? in the US as counter programming against Avatar and it’s not hard to guess which film came out on top. The film grossed a poor $6,616,571 opening weekend, but saw a good hold over the christmas frame with $5,000,143 and a 24.4% decline. Did You Hear About the Morgans? held on over the New Year’s frame, falling just 1.4% to $4,932,338 but then collapsed the following weekend and closed with $29,580,087. Overseas the film fared a bit better, with Germany being the strongest territory at $6.1 million, but the numbers were not strong enough for the film to reach profit. The overseas total came to $55.7 million with an $85.2 million worldwide total, which would leave Sony with about $46.8 million after theaters take their percentage of the gross — which would not even cover the worldwide P&A spend. Weak domestic home video sales came to just under $10 million (less after resellers take their cut and manufacturing costs). During the quarter financial report, Sony reported a profit, but the loss on Did You Hear About the Morgans? was large enough for it to be cited in the financial results.
