After its $20 million predecessor lost a bundle and was rejected in the free market, millionaire with a mission John Aglialoro financed this $10 million sequel to his favorite book. Audiences didn’t show up last time and low and behold, even less showed up this time. Aglialoro blamed critics for the poor turnout of Part I after they savaged the film and did not screen Part II for them. The self distributed film opened in an ambitious 1,012 theaters to $1,751,572 with a poor $1,731 per screen average during its opening weekend. The pic declined 64.9% in its second weekend to $614,349 and promptly lost most of its theater count and closed its US run with only $3,336,053. Since Atlas Shrugged Part II: The Strike was self distributed, Aglialoro receives only a small percentage of the gross (Regal cinemas only pays out 34% to independent distributors) and he saw back about $1.2 million, which wouldn’t even cover the small P&A spend. Despite little audience interest in this series and millions in a write down, Aglialoro decides to damn basic arithmetic and fund Part III.
