Blu-Ray Releases for June 30, 2015

the gunman blu-rayThe Gunman (2015) — StudioCanal fully financed The Gunman for $40m and pre-sold the hot title very well at Cannes, almost selling out every market, which would limit StudioCanal’s exposure to the budget.  Open Road (owned by theater chains Regal and AMC) acquired US rights for an unreported amount and spent over $25m on US marketing costs, including $18.4m in TV ads and opened The Gunman in 2,816 theaters to a terrible $5,028,702.  The Gunman had weak legs and collapsed 59.5% in its second frame to $2,035,989 and declined 81.1% in its third frame to $385,194.  The Gunman quietly left theaters with just $10,664,749 at the box office, which would leave much of Open Road’s acquisition costs and P&A spend in the red and no cash overages to flow back to StudioCanal.  StudioCanal distributed the film in the UK to terrible numbers and it lasted four weeks to £899,792 ($1,415,818) and they also distributed in Australia to a disastrous $301,533.  The Gunman has pulled in an anemic $5,122,849 in its overseas release, across numerous distributors who overpaid for the film and many territories have not reported its box office numbers.  StudioCanal has the film scheduled to open in France June 24 — more after it finishes what will likely be a quick theatrical run…
